I asked my traveling companion on my recent business related trip to Idaho, who is an actual native of the state, if these were some type of wild cherry. He recognized these as a rural canning favorite,
chokeberries, that he picked as a youth and subsequently was made into jams and jellies. Intense research (see Google) showed that these are actually
chokecherries and are easily confused with the berry variety---which we also found as an ornamental shrub at the mine we visited.
Further in-depth research showed that these fruits are also made into wines :)
